About Us In the spring of 2003, Wayne Hellquist, CEO of the Saskatchewan Science Centre, brought together a handful of individuals to discuss how to best profile the value of Wascana Marsh. This unique wetland in the heart of Regina, Saskatchewan could offer much more in the way of outdoor education and tourism. Equally important was the need to ensure this diverse and productive wetland is preserved for nature. From this initial meeting several more dedicated people were recruited and the not-for-profit organization, Friends of Wascana Marsh, was formed. In January 2004, approximately 80 people attended a Stakeholder Workshop to discuss the Wascana Marsh Nature Project. Representatives from government, industry, conservation organizations, academics and the public discussed the value of Wascana Marsh and the potential to expand educational, tourism and interpretive opportunities. The group also unanimously recognized the need to protect the Wascana Marsh from adverse development. The Friends of Wascana Marsh has developed co-operative partnerships with Wascana Centre Authority and the Saskatchewan Science Centre. In 2006, the Friends hosted their first annual "Wings over Wascana" Nature Festival to create awareness of and to celebrate the marsh ecosystem. Fundraising initiatives in support of outdoor educational and interpretive facilities in Wascana Marsh is another priority for the Friends, as well as participating in conservation enhancement projects.
