Wings Over Wascana (WOW) Nature Festival WOW is an outdoor nature festival at Wascana Marsh offering free wetland and wildlife activities, entertainment and guided hikes for people of all ages. This annual festival occurs on the second Saturday in May to coincide with International Migratory Bird Day. Preceding this public event is a fundraising dinner on Thursday evening to raise monies for interpretive components at the marsh, followed by an interactive and educational day for school students on Friday. Public programming begins on Friday evening and continues all day Saturday. Please join us in our celebration of wetlands and wildlife! Wildlife
Viewing Tower & Outdoor Classroom There are several approaches to benefiting from an urban marsh. One way is to create a wildlife sanctuary. The other is finding ways to give people, students in particular, a chance to learn, interact or interpret the marsh and its wildlife inhabitants without unduly disturbing them. A primary objective of the Friends of Wascana Marsh (FWM) is to educate the public, especially school children, on the need to protect our environment in a holistic way. The Friends of Wascana Marsh envisioned a viewing tower as being a great way to expose the public and students to the beauty and complexities of marsh life. Upon consultation with Wascana Centre Authority (WCA), we learned that the tower was also on their wish list. Further discussions led to the idea of an outdoor classroom underneath the tower. From those discussions, a WCA staff created the conceptual designs. To help make the tower and classroom a reality, the FWM decided that their major fundraising efforts would be focused on these projects. At present, a major portion of the proceeds from the fundraising dinners held in conjunction with the Wings over Wascana Nature Festival are set aside for the viewing tower and classroom. In the future, the FWM plan to launch a fundraising campaign in support of these projects. In the meantime, anyone wishing to make a charitable tax donation towards the tower/classroom complex can do so by mailing their contribution to: Wascana Centre Authority Box 7111 Regina, SK S4P 3S7 Ph: (306) 522-3661 Fax: (306) 565-2742 or delivering it in person to 2900 Wascana Drive in Regina, Saskatchewan. Please make cheques payable to "Wascana Centre Authority" and note that it is for the "Viewing Tower/Outdoor Classroom". Do not forget to include your complete mailing address for an income tax receipt. Tax receipts will be issued for contributions of $10.00 or greater.
Interpretive Programs around Wascana Marsh Nature Regina frequently hosts free field trips around the marsh for the general public. Gather the family for an outing at the marsh and participate in your own self-guided Sensory Scavenger Hunt
The Display Ponds are looking great this fall after major upgrades occurred this summer and fall. Wascana Centre Authority staff worked hard to implement a number of improvements to this facility including:
FWM was awarded $6,000 from Farm Credit Canada's Spirit Fund for this project. FWM contributed $6,000 to this project as well. Wascana Centre Authority then matched these funds. Make sure to stop by the ponds next spring and enjoy the rejuvenated area! We will be showcasing these upgrades this spring!
The Friends of the Wascana Marsh will hold their annual general meeting at the SaskTel Theatre, Saskatchewan Science Centre on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 7:00pm. Further information on the AGM will be posted once the minutes are available.
