Wings Over Wascana Nature Festival 2009 May 7- 9, 2009 Special Guest: Mark Brigham - The Bat Man Born in Barrie Ontario, Mark Brigham enjoys the outdoors, travel, sports and learning. Mark has a degree in Biology from Queen's University. His first experience with bats resulted in him pursuing an M.Sc. at Carleton with Professor Brock Fenton the dean of bat research in Canada. Mark and Professor Fenton later decided on a field study of bats for a PhD. This also led him to study the Common Nighthawks, members of a very poorly studied group of birds which, along with bats, Mark has continued to study ever since. Mark is presently with the University of Regina as professor in the Department of Biology and its Head. He supervises students doing research in areas such as hibernation to ecological studies of endangered bird and mammal species. Dr. Brigham has authored or co-authored over 125 papers and is an associate editor for the Journal of Mammalogy. He is a co-chair of the Terrestrial Mammal Species Specialist sub-committee and member of Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. In 2006, he received the Gerritt S. Miller Jr. Award from the North American Society for Bat Research. As a result of his scientific work and public involvement, he is often affectionately referred to as 'the Bat Man'. Mark is a strong proponent of bringing science and research to the public. He regularly gives "bat talks" to school groups, naturalists organizations, service clubs, and in Provincial Parks. Bats provide perfect vehicles for popular talks as they are often misunderstood and for demonstrating why "esoteric" research can be important".
